Arch Pain? Read How Felicity Beat It Without Orthotics

Felicity is an active mum and a busy teacher. When she came to see us, she had excruciating arch pain that just wasn't getting any better. Not only were her feet sore, but her calves and knees were starting to hurt too.

Felicity, a teacher and mum who beat her arch pain without orthotics

Orthotics that stayed in the cupboard

Felicity had already been treated by a couple of healthcare professionals and had spent a lot of money on orthotics. She rarely wore them, because they were hard and only fitted her running shoes.

When she did wear them, she got mild pain relief, but it meant she couldn't wear the shoes she loved. The pain was affecting her basic daily activities and her job as a teacher.

A quick word on plantar fasciitis

Pain in the heel or arch is normally due to plantar fasciitis, and approximately 10% of people will have it at some stage in their life. It's brought on by misaligned joints in the foot, which inflame the tissue under the bottom of the foot. The pull on that tissue causes small tears, and they can be very painful, especially with your first steps of the day or after resting.

Left untreated, it can become a serious problem that restricts your daily activity. (For more on what causes it, read Is heel or arch pain slowing you down?)

Getting to the root cause

At her first consultation, Felicity made it clear she was determined to finally get to the root cause of her arch pain.

Our hands-on joint assessment pinpointed the issue, and it was clear she was compensating around the painful areas of her feet. To address the underlying cause, we started a course of Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT) combined with dry needling of both calves.

FMT is a gentle, hands-on technique that guides the joints back into position. Combined with exercises, it allows the body to heal itself.

Felicity's results

  • First review: Felicity's pain had dropped by about 50%, and she'd noticed significant changes in both feet. She had even stopped wearing her orthotics! If her feet flared up, she had specific exercises to work on, and we'd discuss it at her next visit.
  • Final review: Felicity was happy to tell us her feet and calves were pain free. She was back in her ballet flats, and in high heels for special occasions. Not to mention she's orthotic-free!

Great result, Felicity!
